• The TransPort™ Multi-lumen Operating Platform by USGI Medical provides stable access to a given site of operation within the body, through natural orifices or through an incision in the umbilicus (belly button). It’s designed for precision steering and comfort which aided by the familiar controls of a conventional endoscope.

Once in place, its many features create the multitasking platform needed to perform complex, two-handed surgical maneuvers. The TransPort has four large working channels, which are compatible with endoscopes and endosurgical instruments. The large channels allow users to deploy and use up to three tools simultaneously. The multiple lumens allow instruments to be exchange very quickly during complex procedures.

One of the most important features of the platform is the ability to use robust instruments and transmit high forces efficiently. The TransPort's capacity for larger diameter instruments allows the surgeon to transmit effective forces to the target site; torque, traction, dissection, etc.. The design of the TransPort provides the ability to move the scope during the procedure and relative to the surgical instruments. Therefore, horizon leveling and unprecedented viewing angles are now possible for incision-free surgery.

  • During the sketch phase of this project, several different configurations were developed to explore positions that allow for both single handed and double handed operation. The steering controls of the endoscope are frequently used throughout the procedure, so it was very important to achieve an ideal ergonomic location for the physicians to use.

The final engineering of the handle was done as a 3D CAD model. The internal and external components of the handle were designed to cause both gross and fine adjustments to the instruments at the end of the endoscope as well as the endoscopic tube itself. The 3D CAD Models allowed for fine tuning of the steering controls and the placement of instrument ports.

The TransPort Multi-lumen Operating Platform is foundational component in USGI’s EndoSurgical Operating System (EOS). The TransPort has four large working channels, one for an endoscope and three others for large diameter instruments. This device creates the multitasking platform needed to perform complex, two-handed surgical maneuvers.
